Food Packaging Innovation
Conventional food packages contain and deliver protection to the food products, and meanwhile provide end-use convenience and essential communication to the stakeholders in food supply chain. Innovative packaging systems are aiming to enhance the functionality of a food package so as to reduce food waste and facilitate sustainability. For instance, with the incorporation of a package add-on such as an indicator, sensor or barcode, intelligent packaging system can help track the product’s real-time quality change and distribution history. On the other hand, in active packaging systems, the use of active components such as antioxidants and antimicrobials can substantially prolong the shelf life of perishable foods. A broad spectrum of knowledge may be involved in developing such packaging systems, including general chemistry and physics, organic chemistry, materials sciences, food chemistry, food microbiology, sensory science etc.
