Students from the Computer Science and Technology Programme (CST) won Third Prize at the 2014 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest - Embedded System Design Invitational Contest held in Shanghai this July.

Supervised by Dr Zhou Haichuan, Assistant Professor of the Division of Science and Technology (DST), Deng Churan, Chen Jiahang and Lin Xuan submitted their project and competed against almost 170 teams from universities of mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the US, Germany, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and many other countries.

Their project “Rhythm of Fingers - Gesture Instrumental System” is an advanced real-time entertainment embedded system. This musical instrumental system is gesture-controlled using the Intel Bay Trail embedded board and the Leap Motion controller.

The Leap Motion controller plays the role of a sensor to capture both gestures and hand movements. The Bay Trail board obtains and analyses data from the Leap Motion to simulate areas of the virtual 3D instrument that is played, and in response generates musical tones .

The 2014 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest - Embedded System Design Invitational Contest was initiated by China’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Sponsored by the Intel Corporation since 2002 and held every two years, the contest provides an opportunity for top undergraduate students from all over the world to design a working system based on an assigned Intel embedded platform.
