Prof Fred J Hickernell, Chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, was invited to speak about numerical algorithms to a UIC audience on 20 June. His talk focused on simple numerical algorithms and provided examples of dramatic flaws. He demonstrated how to construct a reliable, adaptive numerical integration algorithm based on the trapezoidal rule.
