Dr. Siutai TSIM won the 2021 "Guangdong Chimelong Animal and Plant Protection Award – Advanced Individual Award"

On the morning of November 22, 2021, the award ceremony of the "2021 Guangdong Chimelong Animal and Plant Protection Award" was held at the Chimelong Wildlife World. The programme director of the Environmental Science Programme——Dr. Siutai TSIM won the 2021 "Chimelong Animal and Plant Protection Award" under the category of Advanced Individual Award, thus, affirming and commending his contributions to wildlife and environmental protection over the past years.

Funded by the Guangdong Chimelong Charity Foundation, guided by the Guangdong Forestry Bureau, sponsored by the Guangdong Zoological Society, and co-organized by the Guangdong Botanical Society and the Guangdong Wildlife Conservation Association, the Guangdong Chimelong Animal and Plant Conservation Award aims to reward advanced individuals who have made great contributions to the protection, education, scientific research, law enforcement and science popularization in the field of wildlife protection in China, as well as those who have supported or engaged in wildlife protection from all walks of life. So far, it has been carried out for 3 years, and expanded from Guangdong Province to the whole country.

2021 Guangdong Chimelong Animal and Plant Protection Award Ceremony

Dr. Siutai TSIM has been engaged in animal and plant research and habitat protection for more than 20 years. During his service at the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of Hong Kong, he was mainly responsible for wetland and animal conservation projects. He facilitated the establishment of the first butterfly nature reserve in Hong Kong——the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, while he was working for an environmental NGO. Since 2020, he has pursued his career at UIC. As the director of the Environmental Awareness Education Center, he and his team have contributed significantly to environmental education, raising environmental awareness among college students and popularizing science among the public. As a lecturer in the Environmental Science Programme, Dr. Tsim insists on continuous innovation to improve teaching quality. In 2019, he applied for the Quality Engineering Project of the Guangdong Provincial Education Department which successfully won the UIC’s Environmental Science Programme the award of ‘Featured Higher Education Programme of the Guangdong Province’. At the same time, he devotes himself to the research of animal and plant protection and environmental protection in Zhuhai. Wild bird ecology is one of his research interests. He guides the undergraduate students to carry out investigation and research on bird diversity in the public parks of Zhuhai every year.Halophila beccariifound in the Tangjiawan bay was once threatened by the coastal restoration project there. Dr. TSIM's team had brought the issue to the public’s and the government’s attention. Eventually, the population ofH. beccariisurvived. Feng shui forests in South China have unique ecological and cultural values. In 2021, his has successfully secured the funding from the Zhuhai Science and Technology Innovation Bureau for his project titled "The application of feng shui forest principles in urban landscape design".

The "Chimelong Animal and Plant Conservation Award" is an affirmation and encouragement for his long-term involvement in and contributions to conservation biology, biodiversity conservation, wild bird ecology, seagrass ecology, habitat restoration, as well as nature conservation and management.
