Master in Public Health, Michigan University, USA
Assistant Project Manager, International Safety System Inc.
I currently work for a third-party consulting company and my work includes providing occupational health-related risk assessment, review, testing, improvement strategies and other services to companies. Occupational health is a branch of public health relevant to many people. It has received increasing attention domestically. It’s increasingly implemented locally though there is still room for improvement. It is challenging to work in a third-party consulting firm but the challenges promote continuous learning and growth. I hope to use what I have learnt to benefit more employees and promote the health of more people.
Master in Environmental Engineering, Newcastle University, UK
Research Officer, Dongguan Municipal Water Board
I joined the eco-water treatment system managed by the Dongguan government after graduation and was responsible for the preliminary design, review, acceptance, environmental assessment as well as water and soil conservation of large and medium-sized water conservancy projects. I am now seconded to the Dongguan City Water Pollution Control Coordination Office and am looking after related matters in the towns and streets within my jurisdiction. I am glad to contribute to the water pollution control in Dongguan.
Master in Environmental Studies, University of Pennsylvania, USA
Sustainability Compliance Auditor, IKEA
I joined IKEA after graduation as a sustainability compliance auditor responsible for the auditing of the performance of IKEA’s suppliers in the aspects of environment, social and work conditions, etc. I also assess the risk of supply chain and provide solutions to green supply chain.
I think my work is very meaningful because it helps companies to implement sustainable development which benefits both humans and the Earth.
ENVS graduates have been accepted by top universities worldwide, for instance University of Hong Kong, University of London, National University of Singapore and Wageningen University to pursue their postgraduate studies. Few testimonials of the graduates are shown below:
MSc Sustainable Resources: Economics, Policy and Transitions, University College London, UK
PhD, UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources
UIC's university life is rich and fulfilling. It allows me to improve in learning and grow personally. There were different challenges each semester which trained me to handle multiple tasks at the same time and to withstand stress. UIC has given me courage and encouragement to grow progressively. The university years pass so quickly and I wish to thank everyone I have met along the way.
Master in Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore
I decided to come to UIC when I was in my second year of high school, and I made the right choice. I grew tremendously in the four years of university. Assignments consisting of quizzes, term tests and group projects came one after another. Summer breaks were scheduled with internships, summer programs, IELTS and GRE courses. The intense learning was a unique experience in UIC which was fulfilling. The courses were taught in English and this gave us better English proficiency comparing to the graduates of other universities in Mainland China. With better English, we have the advantage in going for further studies abroad as well as in future employment.
Environmental science is an interdisciplinary field with many pathways for future development. The four years of study has laid a good foundation for my master’s research. I feel proud to be in the big family of ENVS. My coursemates were friendly and cooperative. The teachers were very good too. There were close interactions between teachers and students. The environment was just great.
Master degree, Wageningen University
The four years in UIC passed so quickly. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the teachers, coursemates and friends who have given me help. They are precious assets to me. Environmental science is a subject with great potential. Environmental issues will be given more attention in future economic development. I am very optimistic about the future of environmental science graduates.
No matter what you study, the most important thing is interest and persistence. Although environmental science has heavy workloads every semester, I believe we will gain much by completing the tasks meticulously. Grades should not be the only target of learning though they are a proof of learning. We should learn as much as possible and undergraduate study is not the end of learning. There is more for us to explore and discover. Let's continue the journey.
