The Division of Science and Technology (DST) held a lecture called ’Food for a Voyage to the Mars: Fantasizing Future Food’ by the Vice President of the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology (CIFST) Professor Rao Pingfan on 8 May. The guests were Dean of DST Professor Stephen Chung, Food Science and Technology (FST) Professor Xu Baojun, Environmental Science (ENVS) Professor Daniel Ruan, Director of General Education Office (GEO) Professor Mildred Yang, and GEO Professor Sookja Kim Chung.

Using VC technology to present this talk to an audience at UIC, a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Carleton University (Ottawa), Prof J David Miller, gave a lecture titled "Mycotoxins: threats to public health and the agricultural economy". Dr. Karen POON (Associate Professor, Associate Dean of the Division of Science and Technology) and Dr. Bo LEI (Associate Professor, Programme Director of Food Science and Technology) have been nominated in May for High-Level Talents by the Zhuhai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau. This is the first time UIC has received the nomination.

Dr. Bruce Xu from Food Science and Technology Program in DST was invited to attend "the 2nd Innovation Development Forum of Chinese Food Industry-University-Research" which was held on November 2-4, 2012 in Beijing. Dr Xu won "Outstanding Research Talent Award". During the meeting, Dr. Xu presented a report entitled "Telomerase Inhibitors Derived from Natural Foods and Their Anticancer Activity", Dr. Xu also attended the 1st editorial board meeting of a new international journal Food Science and Human Wellness, and received letter of appointment as Associate Editor-in-Chief of the first editorial board of Food Science and Human Wellness with a four-year engagement period.
