UICers' colourful summer internships

UICers from diverse programmes have benefitted from valuable internships this summer, gaining practical skills, industry experience, and a deeper understanding of their fields.

Xu Hangjun is a fourth-year student of UIC's Data Science Programme, and this summer, he worked at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences as an algorithm intern.

He said: "This job required me to have strong hands-on skills and solid computer foundations, and provided me with opportunities to be in key research projects and publish papers." He added that the academic atmosphere there was strong, and the senior researchers were quite friendly and helpful when he needed instructions.

Yan Yu'ang is a fourth-year student of UIC's Food Science and Technology Programme, and he interned at the Guangzhou Customs Technology Centre this summer as a lab assistant, dealing with daily experiments on acute toxicity and skin irritation as well as the pre-processing of food and cosmetics testing samples.

The schedule in the centre was tight as Yan had to conduct different experiments on many samples every day. During his internship, he realised they were the gatekeepers for consumers' safety. Such a notion gave him a sense of social responsibility and urged him to learn more about toxicology.

Ning Jiayi, afourth-yearstudent of UIC's Data Science Programme, had been working on his research project at UIC during the summer, funded by the Guangdong provincial government. Although conducting academic research was full of challenges, he was able to seek guidance from excellent professors and scholars, and received front-tier opinions and experience during the journey.

He said that connecting with the outside world and accumulating resources was also beneficial for studying and researching.
