Executive Dean of the School of Mathematical Science of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Prof Li Jiayu, visited UIC to give a lecture on 18 June. The lecture was titled: From the Pythagorean Theorem. President of UIC, Prof Tang Tao, and Vice President (Academic) and Dean of DST, Prof Huang Huaxiong, hosted the lecture.

To begin with, Prof Li introduced the Pythagorean Theorem. Then, he presented the origin of Gauss Theorem and Riemann Geometry in differential geometry and the roles of differential equations in geometry studies. He also explained how these results influence our recognition of nature.

Prof Li is the distinguished professor of the Chang Jiang Scholars Programme (Cheung Kong Scholars Programme) launched by the Educational Ministry. Currently, he takes the role of the Executive Dean of the School of Mathematical Science USTC. Meanwhile, he is an editorial board member of several academic journals such as Science China, Acta Mathematica Sinica, and Journal of Partial Differential Equations.
