The Division of Science and Technology (DST) held an award ceremony for the 2020 CUMCM (China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling) and the 2021 MCM/ICM (Mathematical Contest in Modeling/Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling) participating teams on May 6, 2021. 

The ceremony was hosted by Miss Hongyi Lu, a Year-2 Statistics student, and Dr. Timothy Wu, supervisor for the MCM participants.

Dr. Wu shared with audience that the amounts of prizes and the overall number of awards set a new record high in UIC. A total of 72 teams from UIC participated in 2020 CUMCM, among which 52 teams got awards. One team won the national Second Prize and the provincial First Prize. Another 2 teams won the provincial First Prize, while 9 teams got the provincial Second Prize, 16 teams won the provincial Third Prize, and 24 teams gained the provincial Successful Participants. In 2021 MCM/ICM, 1 group designated as Finalist, 4 groups being Meritorious Winners, and 14 groups winning Honorable Mentions.

President Tao Tang congratulated students on their achievements and pointed out that UIC needs to enhance mathematics education so that more majors can be connected with mathematics.

Professor Huaxiong Huang, the Dean of DST, thanked the teachers who provided training to students during the summer break and encouraged students from different programmes and grades to form winning teams with a diverse set of skills.

The team of three junior Statistics students made into the top 2% of the participants and won the Finalist award. This is by far the highest award won by any UIC teams in MCM/ICM. One of the members, Shuyan Bi, shared their experience in modeling contests. Zimu Xu from Computer Science and Yuchen Mao from Finance took the stage to share their experience of interdisciplinary collaboration.
