Prof. M.H. Wong’ Lecture on Emerging Chemicals of Concern

On March 14th, 2012, Prof. M.H. Wong (Chair Professor of Biology, and Honorary Director of Croucher Institute for Environmental Sciences at HKBU) visited UIC and offered a lecture to DST Environmental Science and Food Science and Technology students.

The talk given by Prof. Wong was Sources, Fates and Effects of Emerging Chemicals of Concern - with focus on the Pearl River Delta. He reviewed the current status of some common emerging chemicals of concern (EEC) in different ecological compartments, and their biogeochemical cycles in the environment, with emphasis on relevant food safety and health issues, by citing some examples related to the Pearl River Delta, and the world's mega site for manufacturing electrical and electronic products. Some management issues of these emerging chemicals are also discussed. Prof. Wong predicted that the fate of emerging contaminants would be difficult, but not hopeless; and he suggested efforts could be make in promising technologies and by establishing public policies.

Prof. Wong also visited DST laboratories and had a discussion with DST Environmental Science and Food Science and Technology teachers about further possibilities and opportunities of cooperation and collaboration.
