Abstract of the talk:

Conventional economic & financial theories are rooted in the top-down view of efficient market hypothesis, stochastic optimization, and agent rationality. Yet since the 2007 Global Financial Crisis, there are increasing criticisms toward such approach. Complex theory, on the other hand, takes a bottom-up view and assumes bounded-rationality, heterogeneity, and endogenous complexity while applied to the financial market and macroeconomy. This talk aims to discuss the recent development of complex system research with an emphasis on its applications in economics and finance, which covers a wide range of topics such as modelling asset price bubbles, systemic risk management, and understanding disruptive technology and innovation.

About the speaker:

Dr. ZHI obtained his PhD in Finance at University of Technology Sydney under Prof. Carl Chiarella, Dr. Corrado Di Guilmi and Prof. Tony Xuezhong He and his Master in Economics at University of Queensland. Before joining UIC, Dr. Zhi had worked at Sun Yat-sen university in Guangzhou for two years as research assistant professor under Prof Zhongfei Li. His works have been published by and presented at a number of international journals and conferences, including Studies in Nonlinear Dynamics and Econometrics (SNDE), Emerging Market Review (EMR), Frontiers of Finance (金融前沿), Computational Economics and Finance (CEF) conference, Workshop of Economics with Heterogeneous Interaction Agents (WEHIA).

On the creative side, Dr. Zhi is also a musician outside his academic career. He wrote numerous piano pieces and songs in his spare time and he performed regularly at venues including Zhuhai Opera House, Steinway Zhuhai, Steinway Guangzhou, ART23 gallery Guangzhou, Shenzhen piano museum, and Huafa music hall in Zhuhai.
