Two SCI Papers Published! BNBU Environmental Science Class of 2023 Showcases Undergraduate Research Achievements

Recently, YE Qiting, a 2023 alumna of the Environmental Science Program of the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology of the Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU), published a paper as the first author in the MDPI journal, diversity, titled "A Review on Landscape Factors for Biodiversity Performance Enhancement in Urban Parks". The paper was based on her undergraduate thesis and was completed under the supervision of her advisor (and corresponding author of the paper), Dr. SiuTai TSIM.

Papers Published by Ye Qiting

Good things come in pairs. Just three months ago, HE Qingyu, a fellow student of YE Qiting, published a paper titled “Valuation of Urban Parks Under the Three-Level Park System in Shenzhen: A Hedonic Analysis” in another MDPI journal, LAND, as the second author. This research also originated from his undergraduate thesis and was completed under the supervision of his advisor (and the first and corresponding author of this paper), Dr. Xun LI.

Research Publications by He Qingyu

The publication of these two papers could not have been possible without the hard work of alumni YE Qiting and HE Qingyu during their undergraduate studies, as well as the careful guidance of their supervisors. Dr. SiuTai TSIM and Dr. Xun LI, both teachers in the Environmental Science program at BNBU, have been focusing on cultivating students' scientific literacy, which is also demonstrated in the mode of student training in Environmental Science.

Spotlight on Paper Authors

Ye Qiting: From UIC to NUS to EHS — A Journey of Continuous Growth

During her four years of study at UIC (the former name of BNBU), thanks to the curriculum of the environmental science major and the diversified on- and off-campus collaborative programs, YE Qiting has had the opportunity to participate in a variety of scientific research projects, ranging from water quality testing internship program and student assistant in the experimental group of toxicology of zebrafish, to the literature study of the impact of landscape factors on urban biodiversity in urban parks and remote sensing data collection, her scientific research level and critical research skills are level and critical research skills have been greatly enhanced. This has also laid a solid foundation for her graduate studies and work.

This growth is attributed to the inspiring academic guidance and open theoretical teaching by her supervisor, Dr. SiuTai TSIM, as well as the close collaboration and support of her research team. The PhD students in the team provided important support for the publication of the paper through the methodological guidance in the early stage and the visualization of the results in the later stage of the paper.

Prior to her undergraduate studies, YE Qiting was admitted to NUS (National University of Singapore). After obtaining her master's degree from NUS, she stayed in Singapore and is currently working in ENGIE Southeast Asia in the field of EHS management, which includes the maintenance of ISO systems related to safety, environment, emergency response, quality management, safety and health inspections and internal audits, supply chain QEHS assessment, company carbon footprint statistics, in-house training and dissemination of EHS information.

He Qingyu: From UIC to NUS to DiDi — A Cross-Boundary Growth Journey

HE Qingyu joined the summer research internship program in his sophomore year and has been actively involved in environmental science projects, such as Fengshui forest research. At the same time, he joined the Green Bridge Environmental Club and organized and participated in various environmental protection activities. All these have cultivated his strong interest in environmental science research.

After entering his junior year, inspired by courses such as GIS and data analysis, and under the professional guidance of Dr. Xun LI, his graduation thesis focused on the impact of park green space on the value of surrounding neighborhoods in Shenzhen. He and his research team innovatively used the characteristic price model and spatial autoregressive model for quantitative analysis, which provided a new perspective and methodology for the assessment of the value of urban green space, which led to the publication of his thesis.

With his solid professional knowledge and passion for public service, HE Qingyu was admitted to NUS before he graduated from undergraduate program, and then successfully got his postgraduate degree. He then moved to Beijing to work as a product and user operator at DDT, where he mainly works on strategy distribution and experimental evaluation for users in sinking districts and counties.
