Environmental Science Faculty and Students Actively Participate in "Earth Hour" Initiative

On March 22nd, “Earth Hour 2025”, an environmental carnival organized by WWF and the Executive Committee of Hengqin Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone, was held in Hengqin, and teachers and students from the Environmental Science Program of the Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU) were invited to participate in the event. Associate Professor SiuTai TSIM, Associate Head of the Department of Life Sciences, as one of the guest speakers of the keynote salon, gave a speech entitled “From Biodiversity in Hengqin to the Cyclic Effect of Light and Climate Change”.

The students and faculty of the Environmental Science Program participated in this event to support environmental protection on the one hand, and on the other hand, to allow students to observe and learn at the event site in conjunction with their major courses. The Environmental Science major focuses on practical teaching, and this year a new major course, Ecological Civilization in Greater Bay Community, was introduced. In addition to classroom lectures, students are also required to go into the community to conduct environmental protection propaganda, enhance the residents' awareness of environmental protection, and embody the major's function of community service, thus contributing to the Ecological Civilization in Greater Bay Community. This “Earth Hour” activity provides a good example for students to learn and gain a lot.

Xiao Yuqian, a senior student of Environmental Science (in the photo below): "This is the first time I participated in this kind of activity from a multi-dimensional learning perspective. Thinking from the organizer's point of view, I feel that I have a new view on science and education activities. Very creative activities and prizes, refreshing!"

Sun Jiaqi, a senior student of Environmental Science (first from the left in the picture below): "In order to have a more in-depth understanding of the ‘Earth Hour’ activity, and also to learn the form and process of organizing this kind of environmental protection activity, I experienced a variety of activities and learned a lot, such as how to learn more environmental protection knowledge as a participant of the game in game. For example, as a participant of the game, how to learn more about environmental protection in the game. The observation and understanding of the design and management of various types of stalls in this event are all valuable experiences."
