On April 12, 2024, the Environmental Science programme and the newly established MSc programme in Sustainable Energy Technology and Management welcomed the back class of 2014 alumnus Wu Zijun to share insights on career prospects in the new energy sector. Dr. Suitai Tsim and Dr. Zijian Wang represented the Environmental Science programme and the MSc programme in Sustainable Energy Technology and Management, respectively, at the sharing session.
Wu Zijun, an alumnus with a Master's degree in Green Technology (Energy) from the Hong Kong Baptist University, currently serves as the Director of Business in the Investment and Mergers Department at Guangzhou Development New Energy Co., Ltd. He has rich experience in the new energy sector, and his engaging presentation provided valuable insights for the student participants.
Against the backdrop of "Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality", the new energy sector is on the rise, providing numerous employment opportunities for majors in environmental science and related fields. The Environmental Science programme at UIC has continually optimized its courses to incorporate new energy-related content, laying a solid foundation for graduates interested in the new energy sector. The newly launched Master's programme in Sustainable Energy Technology and Management offers a "golden ticket" into the new energy industry, presenting students with one more career choice.
Mr. Wu believed that graduates from the Environmental Science programme, equipped with comprehensive knowledge in the Environmental Science field, especially in areas like climate change, environmental impact assessment, geographic information systems, and green business management, have a distinct edge when working in the new energy and green finance sectors. He also encourages students to select business courses, such as basic accounting and law, which could help further their careers in these sectors. In the future, many energy companies will be seeking opportunities overseas. UIC graduates, with their superior English language skills and cross-cultural communication abilities, will have more job opportunities.
As an industry veteran, Mr. Wu addressed the questions and concerns of those students aspiring to make a career in the sector during the sharing session; his insights indeed served as a guiding light for their future paths. He also expressed support for the Master's programme in Sustainable Energy Technology and Management at UIC and stated his hope to see more graduates riding the wave of the new energy sector.
